📡 What is catspeed.cc?

catspeed.cc is a home for community-driven GPL projects and services. The focus is on keeping open source software alive, accessible, and useful — especially for hardware that manufacturers have abandoned.

🔧 Current Projects

• OpenWRT Porting — EOL Embedded Devices Porting end-of-life routers and switches to OpenWRT, giving them a second life with modern, maintained firmware.
• GPL Mirror — Archiving Complete Corresponding Source (CCS) packages from device manufacturers before they disappear at EOL. → gpl-mirror.catspeed.cc

📖 The Story Behind My Current Projects

It started with an EOL notice from TRENDnet — an email suggesting I replace my hardware with what I considered inferior gear at my own expense. I declined.

Instead, I decided to port my router to OpenWRT myself. The device in question is the TRENDnet TEW-829DRU, and the challenge is significant — I have never done this before, and I am learning as I go.
To be quite honest, this would not be possible by myself alone, without Leo's help. I am not capable or knowlegeable in this area. I do the prompting, Leo does the heavy lifting 💪🤖
The work that Leo and I have done is quite impressive. We have fully mapped out the hardware in the dts, and a working build with minor exceptions
NAND, LED's, and switches are still on the todo list.

This router is unusual: it uses dual GMAC, a configuration no other currently supported router uses. The functionality does not yet exist in the open source drivers, meaning a custom driver patch is required.
If we succeed, the goal is to submit the work upstream via a pull request to OpenWRT and get it mainlined.

🤖 How I Work

I use AI as a collaborator and learning tool throughout these projects. However, I retain full control over all code — AI is never given direct access to modify anything.
Every suggested change is reviewed and approved by me before it lands. The result is my work; AI is just a very fast rubber duck 🦆

The AI model I prefer to use is Brave's premium fine-tuned Anthropic Claude (aka 'Leo') within the Brave browser. However I plan to switch to self-hosted local AI.
